The United Arab Emirates (UAE or Emirates)

The Emirates is the short name for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which consists of a federation of seven emirates all located in the South-East of the Arabian Peninsula of the Persian Gulf. Geographically it is part of what is referred to as the Middle East.

The seven states or emirates, which make up the federation are Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain. It is a constitutional monarchy.

The centre of the UAE’s cultural, political and industrial activities is its capital Abu Dhabi. It also is, as a city the second largest with Dubai being the first in size.

Burj al Arab-Dubai

It is oil rich (rated seventh in the world), although today much of its economy is also supported by a rapidly expanding manufacturing industry and with places like Abu Dhabi and Dubai as important financial centers.

Spice Souk-Dubai

Tourism has become a very important part of its economy. With a number of ultra modern airports it also is an important international airline transit centre. Some well known international and UAE owned airlines are based in the Emirates.

There are excellent cultural centers, often as preservation of the various sultanate’s histories, like Sharjah with its Heritage District containing 17 museums, the planned Saadiyat Island a specially created cultural district which includes the modern Guggenheim museum and a Performing Arts Centre.

Best time to visit is November through to February with pleasant day time temperatures of around 24 °C with June-September too hot to enjoy. When planning your visit check what the dates for the Ramadan for that year. For Muslims this a very important time and they do not eat or drink between sunrise and sunset. Non-Muslims are expected not to eat, drink or smoke in public places during this time. On the other hand one may find accommodation often discounted during this time and especially and as soon as the fast is broken there often is a carnival like atmosphere in the streets and markets.

There are many special sporting events in the UAE such as tennis, cricket, motorsports, horse racing and not to forget camel racing.
